New & Featured Music
This page covers new music releases, including things that we are currently featuring. Keep scrolling for more information and links to music that we recommend or think our customers will love.
As you scroll, you will find the albums that we are featuring in our store listening posts, as well as our staff picks. There is also a general list of upcoming releases, as well links to amazing sites that will allow you to search the depths of music.
“There’s no good music coming out these days” is never a true statement in our opinion.
They say there are over 20,000 new releases every week. Hoodlums is here to help. The info below provides resources designed to help you wade through the sea of new music releases that hit the street weekly. Once we let you know what’s coming and recommend a few good sites to expand your search, we’ll talk about the stuff we are featuring.
Upcoming New Release Schedule:
Here’s a quick look at some of this month’s releases, and a look into the future. I am in a bit of hurry, so I haven’t highlighted much (including re-released vinyl and that sort of thing). For the complete lists, please visit our friends at New Music Tipsheet.

The most complete new release lists
Wanna go deeper? Doin’ a little research? Hoodlums recommends using the following sites for CD and Vinyl new release information, and amazing reviews. They are the sites we refer to when we are helping you in the store:
AllMusic Guide. This is our very favorite place to go to check out all things music. The link is set to the new release page, but if you really want to see it at its best, use the artist discography. For instance: If you hear a Grant Green song you like, and you want to find out which album is the one to attack, this place is the place to do it. From there, you can click through to AllMovie or Allgame.
New Music Tipsheet. The guy behind the Tipsheet, Scott Perry, is a passionate music and movie lover like we are. He goes to seemingly every conference and music event in the country, and he reports it back to you and me every week. Well connected, totally indie, and generally pretty thorough. Check it out.
Please remember, release dates change frequently. Even on the best websites, it is hard to keep up with the changes. If you aren’t sure, please ask a hoodlum near you.
P.S. Although Hoodums does not carry all of the new releases you will see on those sites – we would love to special order whatever you need for you – for no extra cost.

Music Websites We Recommend
In addition to the new release sites above, these are sites that have proven themselves trustworthy in our book. We use them all the time. We encourage you to use them as well, because we could never have the time to cover the amazing breadth of information that either of these established giants do.
NPR Music. The National Public Radio website is the best in the business. For Hoodlums, no other radio station turns more people on to cool new albums and artists, in all genres. Plus, this link has all the info you could want on news, art, and culture from all over the world. We signed up for a couple of the music email lists, and they have been loaded with info. Find some new music on this site, and come see your local indie hoodlums to set you up.
Pitchfork Media. At our old store – Pitchfork ruled. It was a trusted source for our ASU customers. I have resisted for ages due to my rebellious nature (it’s a reverse thing, like “I’m not twenty, so I don’t need to do what all the twenty year olds do”), but I have come around recently. Maybe that’s because Kristian, the guy who got a cell phone ten years after everyone else, says he checks it daily (he has joined the digital world a lot more lately, but don’t ask him where our Myspace is or anything). He may not care about tech stuff, but he knows music, and that means Pitchfork is still is a trusted source for us.
Hoodlums’ Staff Picks
Staff picks are always a favorite with customers. They are trickier to collect and present than it might seem, especially if you ask the staff to write something. On the other hand, if you want to hear what the hoodlums at Hoodlums are listening to, we understand. What we really recommend doing is becoming a fan of Hoodlums on Facebook or Twitter, and following along as various hoodlums write, recommend, and record our ongoing feelings about music, movies, and the industry.
In the meantime, you can check out our year end picks here:
